Have you ever been to Richmond?
RICHMOND – RICHMOND PARK
Richmond is a cosy little town inside the big city of Greater London. The atmosphere feels more like a beautiful village in the countryside than a large city. In Richmond there are many shops, restaurants, and pubs, and everything is close by.
The River Thames runs through Richmond, and there are many places where you can walk along the river. The best time of year to visit is from spring to autumn. The landscape is amazing and you can stop and rest in any one of the many cafes along the walk. Richmond was the summer home of Queen Elizabeth I, and you can see Richmond Palace as you walk along the river.
In Richmond, you can find the amazing Richmond Park National Nature Reserve.
Richmond Park has protected status as it’s an important habitat for wildlife. You will be able to see many animals such as deer, birds, squirrels and many others. The landscape is breath-taking! It is one of the few places in London where you can go for a walk and feel that you are out in the countryside. When you’re in the park you can’t see any buildings at all.
If you visit Richmond Park, be sure to visit The Isabella Plantation. This is a 40 acre woodland garden within Richmond Park. It was planted in the 1830’s and first opened to the public in 1953. The plantation has many beautiful plants and trees, as well as small rivers and ponds with many ducks and geese.
We think that Richmond and Richmond Park are in the top 10 best places to visit in London.
Only one stop by tube from Richmond is the world-famous Kew Botanic Gardens. Kew Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and has the largest collection of living plants in the world. When you visit Kew Gardens, you will be able to enjoy all these different varieties of plants and flowers. You will also experience many different types of events.
One of the most famous events at Kew is the Orchid Festival, which takes place every year in February and March. The festival is held in Kew’s giant greenhouses. A greenhouse is made mostly of glass which allows natural sunlight to come through. Even in the middle of winter, it keeps the heat in so that tropical plants can grow. At Kew you can walk around in a warm environment enjoying the thousands of colourful flower displays, and smelling their rich fragrances.
Earlier this month Ayano, a member of our marketing team, went to spend a day at the Orchid Festival. The orchid is the national symbol of Thailand, and the festival included many events connected with Thai culture. Ayano said that visiting the festival was an amazing experience. The Thai orchid displays were breath-taking, and she couldn’t take her eyes off their vivid colours.
The Orchid Festival is only one of the many different events that Kew has during the year. If you want to know more about the Orchid Festival or other events, have a look at their website.
The simplest way to get to Richmond and Kew Gardens is by tube or overground. The area is well served by both the District Line and by the Overground.
